The Chargers put a flag in the ground for Amari Gainer, 58 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Wright. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a wrecking ball inside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Value with a capital V on Troy Franklin in the 37th pick, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Brandon Dorlus at Round 3, Pick 5 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They went early on Mohamed Kamara in the Round 4 slot, and the value did not follow. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Ty'Ron Hopper, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Taking Jaylen Wright in the 183rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 7 slot with a little surplus value in Kenny Logan Jr.. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Amari Gainer well ahead of where he belonged. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
