You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with AJ Barner in the 139th overall pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
Landing Verse that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a home-run threat at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
They barely believed it either: Jared Verse still on the board at No. 37. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in the 69th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Zak Zinter in Round 4, Pick 6 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached into another round for AJ Barner, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Good price on Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the 155th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Frank Gore Jr. at slot 183 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Steele Chambers well ahead of where he belonged. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Isaac Guerendo this early at Round 7, Pick 36. A need, and now a little less of one.
