The Chargers bet big and early on Caleb Okechukwu, 90 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They banked enough surplus on Ali to cover a lot of smaller sins. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Brandon Dorlus in pick 37 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Michael Hall Jr. in No. 69 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A premium they did not need to pay, Tyrice Knight a notch or two before his time. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Ty'Ron Hopper at Round 5, Pick 3 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Value said wait; Xavier Thomas in slot 183 says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Rasheen Ali at No. 223 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A wild overpay on Caleb Okechukwu in slot 256, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
