You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chargers did exactly that with Tanor Bortolini in the 180th pick.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 25 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value.
They liked Kris Jenkins enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Edgerrin Cooper at pick No. 41, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They paid sticker price for Cooper Beebe in Round 3, Pick 5, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cole Bishop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Mason McCormick at the 139th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Tanor Bortolini in No. 180 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tip Reiman in the 225th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Jalen Coker in pick 253; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
