The real work happened on the phones. The Chargers fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They are betting Van Pran proves the room right and everyone else wrong. However the rest shakes out, Williams at that price is a win they earned.
Darius Slayton gives the group a proven body among the projects.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick 17 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Sedrick Van Pran this early at Round 3, Pick 5. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
By-the-book stuff, Leonard Taylor III at the 105th pick squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
James Williams at slot 142 is money in the bank, a safety taken below his worth. A minor itch, scratched.
No edge and no loss on Isaiah Davis in the 183rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They went early on Dylan McMahon in pick No. 226, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
