Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Ollie Gordon II, the No. 175 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 7, Pick 22. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
The Ritzie pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.
They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Abdul Carter in Round 1, Pick 4, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They barely believed it either: Tyler Warren still on the board at pick 38. A need, and now a little less of one.
They reached a country mile for Charles Grant at slot 69, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Denzel Burke at pick No. 77 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A minor itch, scratched.
Good price on Savion Williams in the 105th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Anthony Belton in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A big swing on Jahvaree Ritzie at the 219th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Miles Frazier. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, Ollie Gordon II in pick 240, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
