The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Call it a sensible B-, earned the boring way.
They are betting Fisher proves the room right and everyone else wrong. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Davis falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 3 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
They talked themselves into Jackson Powers-Johnson at pick 40, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Blake Fisher at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Tommy Eichenberg at No. 102 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
The board had cheaper options than Donovan Jackson at slot 103, and it noticed. A need, and now a little less of one.
Malik Washington at Round 5, Pick 3 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They liked Darius Robinson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 141st overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, AJ Barner at the 182nd pick squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Isaiah Davis at pick 224. It fills a real need, too.
