The 49ers did enough to get by: C+.

The 49ers did not so much draft Caden Curry as overpay for him, 49 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.

However the rest shakes out, Haulcy at that price is a win they earned. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Hit on Malachi Lawrence and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.3 · Pick 35 · Malachi Lawrence · DE-EDGE · rank 55
They reached a country mile for Malachi Lawrence at pick No. 35, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.30 · Pick 62 · Lee Hunter · DT · rank 49
A slide stopped in the 62nd overall pick, with Lee Hunter worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · Germie Bernard · WR · rank 63
Germie Bernard in the 66th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.19 · Pick 83 · Caden Curry · DE-EDGE · rank 132
Caden Curry at No. 83 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.21 · Pick 85 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
A safety of that caliber at slot 85 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.23 · Pick 87 · Chase Bisontis · OG · rank 53
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Chase Bisontis in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Malachi Fields · WR · rank 75
They will replay Malachi Fields at pick No. 108 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.38 · Pick 138 · Kaleb Proctor · DL · rank 136
No edge and no loss on Kaleb Proctor in No. 138; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.39 · Pick 139 · Drew Allar · QB · rank 157
Drew Allar at slot 139 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The roster fit checks out.
R5.2 · Pick 142 · Matt Gulbin · C · rank 182
They talked themselves into Matt Gulbin at pick 142, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.4 · Pick 144 · Kaleb Elarms-Orr · LB · rank 181
A real head-scratcher, Kaleb Elarms-Orr in the 144th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
R6.3 · Pick 184 · Ephesians Prysock · CB · rank 192
A premium they did not need to pay, Ephesians Prysock a notch or two before his time. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R6.34 · Pick 215 · Dae'Quan Wright · TE · rank 189
Dae'Quan Wright at Round 6, Pick 34 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
