The Patriots did not so much draft Mason Reiger as overpay for him, 53 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The Muhammad steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped safety, which is a strange place to end up.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Markel Bell in pick 63 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mason Reiger well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Dametrious Crownover at slot 125, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Malik Muhammad all the way to the 131st overall pick, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 171, where Zxavian Harris graded well above the range. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jeff Caldwell. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jimmy Rolder in pick 198, miles early. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid sticker price for Dallen Bentley in the 202nd pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Le'Veon Moss at the 212th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaren Kanak at pick No. 247. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
