Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Kyle McCord, the No. 125 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 174. Very little went wrong, and the A- is earned.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The linebacker spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The veteran additions, Rachaad White chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get a bendy edge with upside. More want than need.
They barely believed it either: Nick Emmanwori still on the board at the 53rd overall pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They robbed the room for Alfred Collins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jordan Phillips at No. 140 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They will replay Tory Horton at slot 150 for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Circle this one: O'Donnell Fortune at the 170th pick is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Emery Jones Jr. in pick 172 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Kyle McCord was still sitting there in the Round 5 slot, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A quiet steal in No. 190: Simeon Barrow Jr. for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick No. 211 is the definition of value, full stop. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Clay Webb at pick 249 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
