You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
So much rides on Quinn Ewers that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Dart. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Quinshon Judkins at slot 26 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Walter Nolen in the 39th pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Tate Ratledge at par in pick No. 58, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Tez Johnson at Round 3, Pick 7 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Anthony Belton went about where he belonged in the 90th overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jamon Dumas-Johnson in pick 122 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board fumbled Jaxson Dart all the way to No. 154, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
A slide stopped in pick No. 186, with Gentry Williams worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
