The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Walter Nolen, the No. 17 name on the board, sitting there at the 44th overall pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Thornton Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Abdul Carter at No. 12. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They robbed the room for Walter Nolen here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Deone Walker at pick No. 76 is the proof. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They took Logan Brown at par in pick 150, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tyler Shough at the Round 5 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid up for Dont'e Thornton Jr. at slot 172 when waiting would have done the job. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ollie Gordon II at Round 5, Pick 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
