You can hear the double-takes from here. The Texans took Barryn Sorrell at the Round 4 slot, roughly 200 spots before his name belonged.
They banked enough surplus on Higgins to cover a lot of smaller sins. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. It is not that Winston Jr. is a bad player; it is that the Texans had louder needs to answer first.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a building block for the line, even if it was a touch early.
In pick 31 they get a red-zone target to build around, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Jahdae Barron at the 33rd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A tidy bit of business in Round 2, Pick 2, where Nick Emmanwori graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Omarion Hampton is a better player than the 45th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A quiet steal in slot 58: Tre Harris for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Jalon Walker was still sitting there in pick 89, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tate Ratledge at the 94th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Value said wait; Rylie Mills in the Round 3 slot says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A want over a need in slot 116: Kevin Winston Jr. adds a safety while quarterback keeps waiting.
A big swing on Barryn Sorrell at pick No. 127, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Circle this one: TreVeyon Henderson at No. 152 is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Kyren Lacy at the 167th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for Jay Higgins here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A need, and now a little less of one.
