You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Enrique Cruz Jr. at Round 7, Pick 4, roughly 79 spots before his name belonged.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
The dealing was even money, start to finish.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 26th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Dani Dennis-Sutton at the Round 2 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A straight-up fair deal on Bryce Lance at Round 3, Pick 31, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jack Endries in pick No. 125 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A reach on Kaleb Elarms-Orr in pick 171; the board had better options right there. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No edge and no loss on Ephesians Prysock in the 191st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
VJ Payne at pick 198 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Cole Payton went about where he belonged in the Round 6 slot. It fills a real need, too.
David Gusta in the 212th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Enrique Cruz Jr. at the 220th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Eli Heidenreich at slot 247 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
