The Rams bet big and early on Eric Gentry, 101 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right.
The Thomas value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They came away with juice, if not much beef up front.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th overall pick they get a lead back with juice at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
D'Angelo Ponds slipping to pick 62 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It adds depth where they could use a little.
By-the-book stuff, Drew Shelton at the 93rd pick squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A real head-scratcher, John Michael Gyllenborg in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Robert Spears-Jennings. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Eric Gentry at No. 251 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Zavion Thomas at the 252nd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
