Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Brian Thomas Jr., the No. 26 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 88.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Every board in the league had Ali lower, and that gap is the story.
Cornerback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a true top target at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
Tyler Guyton slipping to the 41st pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Graham Barton was still sitting there in pick No. 58, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
You do not let a wide receiver like Brian Thomas Jr. reach the Round 3 slot and blink. They did not. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Dadrion Taylor-Demerson at slot 95 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
The board fumbled Khyree Jackson all the way to the 126th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Tykee Smith is a better player than pick 169 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Tip Reiman at No. 202 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They did well to land Nathaniel Watson in the 219th overall pick, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They jumped the gun on Rasheen Ali, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 255 is the definition of value, full stop. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
