The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Michael Penix Jr., and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
Landing Davis that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Reaching for Suamataia left real value on the table behind him. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 13th pick they get a franchise quarterback. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Ladd McConkey in pick 34; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They went early on Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 44, and the value did not follow. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, Cade Stover went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Bucky Irving is a better player than No. 103 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
Sataoa Laumea at Round 5, Pick 1 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Xavier Thomas in slot 180 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jaylen Harrell in the 193rd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Isaiah Davis at the 208th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Trente Jones in No. 231 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
