The phones were a trap the Bears kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.
Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
That Trotter Jr. pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 1st pick they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 9 they get a true top target at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 75th overall pick is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They took Blake Corum at par in Round 3, Pick 20, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Matt Goncalves at No. 109 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A clean, defensible pick in slot 118 with a little surplus value in Mekhi Wingo. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Javon Foster in pick 121 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A need, and now a little less of one.
