Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Browns were there to profit. Nick Nash, the No. 141 name on the board, should have been long gone before Round 6, Pick 24.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Every board in the league had Jackson lower, and that gap is the story.
They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and interior defensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. The biggest hole, addressed.
In slot 30 they get a true top target, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
You do not let a cornerback like Jahdae Barron reach Round 2, Pick 1 and blink. They did not. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reach on Will Howard in pick No. 94; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Carson Schwesinger in pick 103, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A running back of that caliber at No. 165 is the definition of value, full stop. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Ben Sauls at the 181st overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A quiet steal in the Round 6 slot: Jaylen Reed for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Nick Nash at slot 202 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Circle this one: Luke Lachey at pick 216 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Antwane Wells Jr. in No. 217 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Torricelli Simpkins III slipping to the 257th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
