The Patriots went off the board in a big way for Bryson Nesbit, 63 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Moore steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on James Pearce Jr. in the 14th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
In slot 22 they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
The board had Isaiah Bond higher than pick No. 40, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Tyleik Williams at Round 2, Pick 9 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Mykel Williams is a better player than pick 49 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Warren at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jay Higgins at pick No. 72 is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They robbed the room for Emery Jones Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
You do not let a safety like Malachi Moore reach pick 108 and blink. They did not. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Ollie Gordon II at No. 109 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They read the board right and Drew Allar was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They reached a country mile for Bryson Nesbit at the 144th pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid a round early for Quincy Riley in Round 6, Pick 10, more than the board wanted. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They talked themselves into Jason Henderson at the 218th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Value said wait; Tony Grimes in Round 7, Pick 6 says they were not listening. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Marcus Mbow in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They let Deion Burks come to them and pounced at pick No. 242. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Zane Durant at the 256th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
