The Browns spent the pick that matters most on Cam Ward, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Nothing here to lose sleep over; call it a B.
That Bryant pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Pegues pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They went 9 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get a franchise quarterback at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No edge and no loss on Nic Scourton in pick 33; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Aireontae Ersery still on the board at pick No. 67. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Taking Dylan Sampson in the Round 3 slot is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value with a capital V on Danny Stutsman in Round 4, Pick 2, a genuine coup. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They jumped the gun on JJ Pegues, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Circle this one: Pat Bryant at the 181st pick is a fall that decides a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They will replay Upton Stout at the 216th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Alijah Huzzie in Round 6, Pick 39. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jackson Hawes at the Round 7 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the tight end. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
