After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The Fisher value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The cost of the Ceaser reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
They read the board right and Troy Fautanu was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cooper DeJean slid further than he should have, and pick No. 37 is lovely value for the cornerback. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kamren Kinchens in the 67th overall pick. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Value with a capital V on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 78, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Steal is underselling it; Kris Abrams-Draine at Round 3, Pick 37 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nelson Ceaser at slot 139 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Blake Fisher in pick 152 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Evan Williams is a better player than slot 222 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
