The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 68 spots for Brandon Thomas, and value like that does not grow back. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. Spending an early pick on linebacker with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get a potential shutdown corner, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They let T.J. Tampa come to them and pounced at No. 51. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Payton Wilson at pick No. 65 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A slide stopped in pick 83, with Johnny Wilson worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A straight-up fair deal on Tyler Davis at the 88th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Matt Goncalves at the 92nd pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A curious use of No. 125. Edge rusher, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a linebacker in Cedric Gray did not.
No edge and no loss on Dylan Laube in slot 135; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jordan Jefferson at the 168th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It fills a real need, too.
Kenny Logan Jr. at Round 6, Pick 28 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Carson Steele in the 217th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Daequan Hardy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Brandon Thomas in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
