The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Packers reached some 33 spots for Carson Steele, and value like that does not grow back.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. That Melton pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Good price on Kamren Kinchens in the 41st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid a round early for Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 25, more than the board wanted. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Johnny Wilson in pick 88 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A slide stopped in slot 125, with Max Melton worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach for Braelon Allen in pick 135; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Tanor Bortolini in slot 203; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A big swing on Carson Steele at Round 6, Pick 42, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Phil Jurkovec in the 219th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Demani Richardson in the 246th pick. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
