The Carson Steele pick is the one that will follow the Packers into the fall. They took him 81 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
The Flournoy pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The Wilson pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, tight end and other spots. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
They left with cornerback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 25 they get a ballhawk on the outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A conviction pick on Edgerrin Cooper at the 41st overall pick that the board grades a round light. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Payton Wilson while clear needs at edge rusher, tight end and other spots sat open.
No drama and no debate, Dominick Puni went about where he belonged in pick No. 88. A need, and now a little less of one.
Johnny Wilson at the Round 3 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tanor Bortolini at the 126th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Kamal Hadden in slot 169 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Joe Milton III in pick No. 202, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They went early on Dominique Hampton in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Carson Steele in pick 245, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Taking Ryan Flournoy in No. 255 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
