The Chiefs put a flag in the ground for Walter Rouse, 31 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.
The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end, quarterback and other spots still on the board. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. Wright falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
Nice patience on Troy Franklin, who had no business lasting to pick No. 32. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Chris Braswell at Round 2, Pick 32 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in the 95th pick leaves tight end, quarterback and other spots for later.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamal Hadden. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Khristian Boyd at No. 158 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board had Jaylen Wright higher than pick 172, and the running back fell to them anyway. It fills a real need, too.
They took Christian Jones at par in the 210th pick, which is nothing to complain about. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Walter Rouse at Round 7, Pick 30 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
