Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Chiefs were there to profit. Dani Dennis-Sutton, the No. 82 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 193. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Spending an early pick on defensive back with tight end, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
A curious use of pick 32. Tight end, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a defensive back in Malaki Starks did not.
Tez Johnson is a better player than the 64th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Ashton Gillotte still on the board at the 69th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ashton Jeanty in slot 96 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Wyatt Milum at pick No. 128 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ajani Cornelius in No. 160 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dani Dennis-Sutton at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
Somehow Dylan Fairchild was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 32, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
