There is reaching, and then there is Matthew Jones at Round 6, Pick 38. The Cowboys jumped the board by 41 and dared it to prove them wrong.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. Getting Bertrand where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but wide receiver.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A conviction pick on Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot that the board grades a round light. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Trey Benson enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 87. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Walter Rouse at No. 173 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Matthew Jones at slot 213 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
JD Bertrand in the 231st pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
KT Leveston at the 242nd pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
