New England Patriots

Good, not great, for the Patriots: B-.

The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Patrick Payton, 66 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.

Landing Ponds that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Olaivavega Ioane · OG · rank 19
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get an anchor for the offensive line, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
R3.8 · Pick 72 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 51
You do not let a linebacker like Jacob Rodriguez reach pick No. 72 and blink. They did not. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · D'Angelo Ponds · CB · rank 48
Steal is underselling it; D'Angelo Ponds at pick 95 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Malik Benson · WR · rank 146
They reached into another round for Malik Benson, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Ted Hurst · WR · rank 89
They will replay Ted Hurst at the 125th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Gracen Halton · DL · rank 128
They did well to land Gracen Halton in the 131st pick, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Logan Fano · DE-EDGE · rank 225
Logan Fano at the 171st pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Patrick Payton · DE-EDGE · rank 257
Patrick Payton at Round 6, Pick 10 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Dae'Quan Wright · TE · rank 188
A slide stopped in slot 198, with Dae'Quan Wright worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.18 · Pick 199 · Kaleb Elarms-Orr · LB · rank 182
The board had Kaleb Elarms-Orr higher than pick No. 199, and the linebacker fell to them anyway. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Jeff Caldwell · WR · rank 192
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jeff Caldwell at No. 202 is the proof. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Matt Gulbin · C · rank 185
Matt Gulbin at the 212th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Jaren Kanak · TE · rank 236
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaren Kanak at pick 247. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
