The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
They will need Wiley to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Adonai Mitchell at pick 34 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Roman Wilson at the Round 3 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid sticker price for Matt Goncalves in the 104th overall pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
A straight-up fair deal on Cam Hart at the 136th pick, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jared Wiley. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They talked themselves into Matthew Jones at Round 7, Pick 9, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
