The Cowboys looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Desmond Evans at pick No. 256 regardless, 58 picks early. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
That Muasau pick is the receipt they will wave around later. That wide receiver hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Dallas Turner at the Round 1 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Khyree Jackson at the 87th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Matt Goncalves at the 89th overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Edefuan Ulofoshio at slot 124, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Aki Ogunbiyi at No. 187, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Daequan Hardy at pick 225 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They liked Dylan McMahon enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 229. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They jumped the gun on Aaron Frost, taking him earlier than his grade liked. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They will replay Darius Muasau at the Round 7 slot for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A wild overpay on Desmond Evans in Round 7, Pick 36, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
