The board owed the Packers one, and it paid up: Luke McCaffrey, the No. 149 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 6 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The Laube reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. The Gray pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at quarterback. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Amarius Mims at No. 32 is the proof. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had cheaper options than Edgerrin Cooper at the Round 2 slot, and it noticed. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Jaylen Wright in the 58th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Adisa Isaac at slot 88 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ruke Orhorhoro in the 90th pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A need, and now a little less of one.
Max Melton slid further than he should have, and pick No. 91 is lovely value for the cornerback. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A slide stopped in pick 93, with Jaden Hicks worth more than the price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Mahogany at Round 3, Pick 31, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went linebacker with Cedric Gray while clear needs at quarterback sat open.
They paid a round early for Roger Rosengarten in No. 126, more than the board wanted. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dylan Laube at pick No. 130 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Khristian Boyd in the 169th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They will replay Luke McCaffrey at the 186th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A tight end of that caliber at the Round 6 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They robbed the room for Johnny Dixon here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jackson Mitchell at Round 7, Pick 25 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
No edge and no loss on Ryan Watts in pick 255; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
