You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Power Echols in Round 7, Pick 32.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Trevor Etienne well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Noah Fifita at the 94th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It fills a real need, too.
Jason Marshall Jr. at slot 96 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Sonny Styles at pick No. 126 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
The board had cheaper options than Jaishawn Barham at Round 5, Pick 30, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Keaten Wade in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Carson Hinzman in pick 192 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A wild overpay on Deontae Lawson in the Round 7 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Power Echols in No. 224, miles early. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
