Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Danny Stutsman, the No. 90 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 168.
Reaching for Campbell left real value on the table behind him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
They have staked the next five years on Shedeur Sanders, which is the only story that really matters here. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 1 they get the face of the franchise at fair value.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ashton Jeanty in the 12th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptive interior force. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Tate Ratledge at the 34th pick squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jalon Walker in pick No. 74 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Sonny Styles all the way to slot 148, and they scooped it up. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They robbed the room for Danny Stutsman here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jake Majors at the 170th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Harold Perkins Jr. in Round 5, Pick 33 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, DJ Campbell in No. 186 is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Miles Frazier. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
