The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Chargers watched Johnny Dixon slide 62 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Too much went sideways, and the D+ is the honest tally.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Caleb Williams is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 1 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 16 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
They took Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at par in Round 2, Pick 5, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jordan Morgan in pick No. 38 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy bit of business in the 69th overall pick, where Adisa Isaac graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Xavier Legette here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Bucky Irving at No. 105 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
DeWayne Carter at pick 110 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Javon Solomon at the 122nd pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. This was not a hole anyone had circled.
They will replay Will Shipley at pick 140 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow James Williams was still sitting there in the 181st overall pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A minor itch, scratched.
A edge rusher of that caliber at the 192nd pick is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Johnny Dixon all the way to Round 7, Pick 33, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
