The Chargers treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending the Round 5 slot on Michael Barrett a full 38 spots early.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Bo Nix gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Landing Sainristil that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 1 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In No. 5 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
In the 12th overall pick they get a true top target. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
A wild overpay on Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 41, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Brandon Dorlus in the Round 2 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Mekhi Wingo at the 69th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
D.J. James at pick No. 75 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Blake Corum in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Roman Wilson at Round 3, Pick 28 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Mike Sainristil at slot 99. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Khyree Jackson at the 105th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Michael Barrett at pick 142, well ahead of any board in the building. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A quiet steal in No. 183: Curtis Jacobs for less than the market said. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
David Ugwoegbu at the 211th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
They let Blake Watson come to them and pounced at the Round 7 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Aaron Frost at slot 249 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A need, and now a little less of one.
