It is the swing that defines the weekend: Devin Culp in the 233rd pick, a good 71 spots before the room expected him. It bottoms out at a F.
Everything downstream of Jayden Daniels depends on Jayden Daniels, and the building knows it. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
However the rest shakes out, Ford at that price is a win they earned. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In short, a weekend the front office will want to forget in a hurry.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Fair-plus on Edgerrin Cooper, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
By-the-book stuff, Kingsley Suamataia at slot 57 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Bralen Trice at pick 58 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Value with a capital V on Max Melton in pick No. 87, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brenden Rice at Round 4, Pick 6. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Beau Brade in the Round 5 slot. A minor itch, scratched.
A quiet steal in slot 174: Dwight McGlothern for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jase McClellan in No. 193 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jaylan Ford is a better player than pick No. 219 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They talked themselves into Devin Culp at pick 233, and the board did not agree. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Jordan Whittington at the 245th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
