Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: D-.

by Goodballls · 2024 NFL Draft · 9 picks · 2 steals · 3 reaches

Call it belief, call it a gut call, but C.J. Hanson at the 242nd overall pick is 32 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. Whatever J.J. McCarthy becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer.

Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. On value alone, Bertrand makes the weekend a net positive.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, wide receiver very much included.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.24 · Pick 24 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 23
In the 24th pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.26 · Pick 26 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 32
In pick No. 26 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 47
They read the board right and T'Vondre Sweat was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Braden Fiske · DL · rank 70
They went early on Braden Fiske in slot 57, and the value did not follow. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.24 · Pick 87 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 94
Trey Benson in Round 3, Pick 24 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 189
Jase McClellan in No. 173 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.38 · Pick 213 · Nathan Thomas · OT · rank 207
A clean, defensible pick in No. 213 with a little surplus value in Nathan Thomas. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 210
Taking JD Bertrand in Round 7, Pick 11 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R7.22 · Pick 242 · C.J. Hanson · OG · rank 274
A real head-scratcher, C.J. Hanson in the 242nd overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
