The Dolphins bet big and early on Donovan Smith, 117 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Put together, it is a D-.
However the rest shakes out, Carter at that price is a win they earned. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
In slot 13 they get a run-stuffing presence up front, reach and all. The biggest hole, addressed.
Steal is underselling it; Malaki Starks at pick No. 42 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
Will Howard in the 48th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylin Noel at the 98th pick, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They jumped the gun on Luke Kandra, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The roster fit checks out.
Donovan Smith at the 114th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Elijah Arroyo in the 130th overall pick, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at slot 133 is the definition of value, full stop. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Cobee Bryant at No. 149 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Barrett Carter in Round 5, Pick 17 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
