The Chiefs did not so much draft Jalen Coker as overpay for him, 32 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It nets out a thoroughly average C+.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Vaki steal is the beam this whole class leans on. They gave back a little on the phones for the right to move.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Call it incomplete, and check back in a couple of seasons.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A quiet steal in the 34th pick: Amarius Mims for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Mike Sainristil at slot 67 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mohamed Kamara. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Sione Vaki is a better player than No. 173 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Logan Lee in the Round 6 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A wild overpay on Jalen Coker in slot 218, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
KT Leveston at the 250th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
