The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The Shipley pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
The Solomon pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with cornerback and interior defensive lineman still on the board.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 2 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
Chop Robinson in Round 2, Pick 4 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Patrick Paul at No. 40 squarely in line with his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
The board had cheaper options than Malachi Corley at the 67th pick, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They bypassed pressing needs at cornerback and interior defensive lineman to take Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE that was not the priority.
Will Shipley at the 103rd overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
James Williams at slot 138 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A minor itch, scratched.
Taking Edefuan Ulofoshio in pick 181 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They talked themselves into Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick 220, and the board did not agree. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
