Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Mason McCormick at slot 100 is 46 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. The math is unkind, and the D follows.
They have staked the next five years on Drake Maye, which is the only story that really matters here. The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close.
Getting Mims where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Kamari Lassiter at the Round 2 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Chris Braswell went about where he belonged in No. 36. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took T'Vondre Sweat at par in pick 40, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Amarius Mims at pick No. 41 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They paid up for Devontez Walker at the 58th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cooper Beebe in Round 3, Pick 2 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in pick 67, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A quiet steal in slot 71: Malachi Corley for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They did well to land Khyree Jackson in No. 90, just ahead of his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Mason McCormick at the Round 3 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jonah Elliss slipping to pick No. 102 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Ben Sinnott at the 104th pick, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
James Williams at the 126th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 5 slot with a little surplus value in Christian Jones. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Javion Cohen in No. 169; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wild overpay on Frank Gore Jr. in pick No. 202, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
They read the board right and Nathaniel Watson was the payoff at pick 222. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
