The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Commanders reached some 46 spots for Mason McCormick, and value like that does not grow back. Put together, it is a D-.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits.
The Robinson value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In the end, a class the front office will want to grow past quickly.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 3 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 34, where Chop Robinson graded well above the range. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jordan Morgan at No. 35 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Darius Robinson in pick 36 is fair value, right on his grade. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took T'Vondre Sweat at par in the 40th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No drama and no debate, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. went about where he belonged in the 67th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Xavier Legette. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Khyree Jackson in the 71st overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They liked Zak Zinter enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 90. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Mason McCormick at slot 100 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Christian Jones at the Round 4 slot, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No edge and no loss on Will Shipley in No. 104; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Ainias Smith at Round 5, Pick 1 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Tommy Eichenberg at Round 5, Pick 3, value and slot in agreement. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jared Wiley this early at the 180th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A big swing on Jalen Sundell at pick 222, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
