There is conviction, and then there is this. The Commanders took Mason McCormick a full 46 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They will answer for taking safety early while running back and interior defensive lineman went begging.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On value alone, Robinson makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Drake Maye at the 2nd overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Graham Barton at pick No. 27 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Chop Robinson slid further than he should have, and pick 35 is lovely value for the edge rusher. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kamari Lassiter in slot 36 is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good price on Jordan Morgan in the Round 2 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Devontez Walker in the 66th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 67. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A straight-up fair deal on Khyree Jackson at the 78th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Calen Bullock at pick 90 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Mason McCormick at the 100th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking James Williams at safety with running back and interior defensive lineman open.
They did well to land Christian Jones in No. 139, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jacob Cowing at Round 5, Pick 16 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brevyn Spann-Ford this early at slot 222. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
