After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline.
Wilson at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Williams pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A real need, handled.
Cooper Beebe in No. 36 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jordan Morgan in the 40th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A tidy little value on Malachi Corley in the 67th overall pick, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reach on Khyree Jackson in pick 78; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
James Williams at pick No. 100 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A straight-up fair deal on Mason McCormick at Round 5, Pick 3, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Johnny Wilson at the Round 5 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value with a capital V on Tanner McLachlan in Round 7, Pick 2, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
