Start where it matters. The Commanders took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
Reaching for Wiley left real value on the table behind him. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Drake Maye in the 2nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jordan Morgan at pick No. 36 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cooper Beebe in the 40th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid sticker price for Devontez Walker in pick 67, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Khyree Jackson a notch or two before his time. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: James Williams in No. 100, miles early. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No edge and no loss on Mason McCormick in Round 5, Pick 3; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jared Wiley in slot 152 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Fair-plus on Garret Greenfield, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
