You could see the war room lean forward. M.J. Devonshire at slot 233 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. They will need Milton III to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
On the needs board they went 7 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with tight end the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Troy Fautanu at pick No. 35 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Good price on Jackson Powers-Johnson in slot 36, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in Round 2, Pick 24, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach for DeWayne Carter in pick 87; a little patience would have been rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
MarShawn Lloyd in No. 97 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Somehow Kalen King was still sitting there in the 162nd overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Joe Milton III at the 174th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Johnny Dixon at the Round 6 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Nathaniel Watson at the 216th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Ryan Flournoy in slot 226, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
M.J. Devonshire at the 233rd pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
