The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
Reaching for Williams left real value on the table behind him. It is not that Williams is a bad player; it is that the Commanders had louder needs to answer first. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
Jordan Morgan in the 36th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Kamari Lassiter. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Devontez Walker at pick 67, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. slid further than he should have, and the 78th pick is lovely value for the linebacker. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. James Williams in slot 100 leaves tight end, edge rusher and other spots for later.
No edge and no loss on Mason McCormick in pick No. 139; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Luke McCaffrey at the Round 5 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 222 with a little surplus value in Garret Greenfield. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
