The Commanders lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
The whole projection now runs through Drake Maye; hit there and everything else looks smarter. They are betting Williams proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Spending an early pick on linebacker with edge rusher and running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
Jones falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
In slot 27 they get a load in the middle, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Jordan Morgan went about where he belonged in the 35th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brian Thomas Jr. at the Round 2 slot. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 67 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for Cade Stover in Round 3, Pick 7, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They let Devontez Walker come to them and pounced at No. 78. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Khyree Jackson at par in pick 90, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A want over a need in pick No. 100: James Williams adds a linebacker while edge rusher and running back keeps waiting.
They went early on Mason McCormick in pick 138, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A top-tier cornerback at a bargain, Elijah Jones in the 139th overall pick, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Kitan Oladapo at No. 152, value and slot in agreement. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Tanner McLachlan slipping to the 222nd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
