The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Caleb Williams, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
The Commanders indulged a want in Solomon while a need in wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots stayed open. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The McKinstry steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
They are betting Paul proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 2 they get their quarterback of the future. A real need, handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kool-Aid McKinstry in the Round 2 slot. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on Patrick Paul in pick No. 40; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Payton Wilson in the 70th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went OLB-EDGE with Javon Solomon while clear needs at wide receiver, edge rusher and other spots sat open.
By-the-book stuff, Khyree Jackson at slot 102 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No drama and no debate, Drake Nugent went about where he belonged in the 141st overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Theo Johnson in Round 5, Pick 7; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
